WASHINGTON — A president does not have to like the press. He does not have to agree with journalists, and he certainly does not have to appreciate criticism. But when the government begins restricting journalists because of what they report, the issue becomes far bigger than a political dispute.
President Donald Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House has raised serious questions about the relationship between presidential power and a free press. Trump accused the outlets of publishing “fake news” and warned that other media organizations could face similar restrictions.
